abstract

this study was conducted to evaluate the current management of furrow and border irrigation systems in the dez irrigation network. of the eight farms studied, three grew wheat and one each grew corn, sugar beets, lettuce, sesame and mung beans. the study found water application efficiency in the five farms with furrow irrigation systems to be 25.8% and for the three farms with border irrigation systems to be 32.7%. the main reason for water loss was found to be runoff and deep percolation. scs infiltration equation parameters were calculated using the obtained data. for each farm, conditions were simulated using the scs equation. methods for optimum irrigation were developed based on variables such as discharge inflow, furrow/ border length and cut-off time and cut-back methods.

Integrated Evaluation of Increasing Irrigation Efficiency and Reducing Discharge Impacts on Hydropower Generation of Basin Water Resources System(Case Study: Dez Irrigation Network – Dez Dam)

World electricity production today is heavily dependent on water resources. Studies have shown that global warming and climate changes will have significant impacts on available water resources to produce hydroelectric power. Considering that the reservoir dam in the catchment area of Dez is simultaneously a producer of hydropower and supplier of water needed for agricultural land, the aim of t...

Estimation of Actual Evapotranspiration, Water productivity, and Irrigation Efficiency of Wheat Fields in Surface and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems Using Remote Sensing

In arid and semi-arid regions, water resource management and optimization of applying irrigation water are particularly important. For optimization of applying irrigation water, the estimated values of actual evapotranspiration are necessary for avoiding excessive or inadequate applying water. The estimation of actual crop evapotranspiration is not possible in large areas using the traditional ...

Irrigation Pumping Plant Efficiency

Rising energy costs have increased the cost of pumping to the point that many farmers are finding irrigation to be unprofitable or only marginally profitable. Fortunately, however, pumping costs are an item that farmers have some degree of control. Pumping costs often are higher than they need be for two reasons: 1.) more water is pumped than is necessary, and/or, 2.) the pumping plant operates...

Accuracy of Irrigation Efficiency Estimates

Evaluation of actual irrigation system perfonnance should rely on an accurate hydrologic water balance over the area considered. In a companion paper, water uses are categorized as consumptive or noncon sumptive, and beneficial or nonbeneficial. Real perfonnance is based on water uses over a specified period of time, rather than observation of a single irrigation event (with associate potentia...

Complexity of Operation and Maintenance in Irrigation Network Management-A Case of the Dez Scheme in the Greater Dezful, Iran

Food and fibre production in arid and semi-arid regions has emerged as one of the major challenges for various socio-economic and political reasons such as the food security and self-sufficiency. Productive use of the renewable water resources has risen on top ofthe decision-making agenda. For this reason, efficient operation and maintenance of modern irrigation and drainage schemes become part...

Economics of Surface Irrigation Systems

Irrigated agriculture in Idaho faces a decline in the availability of water and increasing costs for that available water. The demand for recreational and environmental urban water use continues to grow. Adopting improved irrigation technology is one of the few remaining alternatives that agriculture can use to address this problem. Development of large-scale water projects to enhance water sup...
